You are the axis on which my world spins round, The central sun, the solid, fertile ground. Each thought, a whispered prayer sent up to you, The one bright star in all my lonely view. My compass, my true north, my reason's core, You are the everything I'm living for. But when our paths intersect in simple grace, I read no echo of myself upon your face. I am a shadow passing by your light, A pale gray whisper in your dazzling sight. A single raindrop lost within the sea, A trivial note in your grand symphony. I offer up my heart, a heavy, golden prize, Reflected small, diminished, in your eyes. To you, I’m just a breath, a moment fleeting, past, While in my soul, your presence is built to last. And this is where the quiet sorrow lies: To be the world to you, while you are not my size.
