"Do you want to kill yourself?" he asked. I'd never heard anyone ask me that before— never out loud. I sit at the edge of the roof, staring down at the ocean. "Do I want to kill myself?" "Do you think it's worth it?" I ask He answers softly eyes distant, like he's seen too much. "No... I see a lot of them regret it in the end— souls crying, screaming, begging to return." "Do you want to kill yourself?" he asks again, quieter this time, like he's already heard the answer. "I don’t know," I say. "What if I regret it?" "They all do." "How do you know that?" I whisper, searching his face for something human. He looks at me, a flicker of sadness in his smile. "Because I’m Death," he says. "And I never forget a scream.” D.fyffe
