I remember as a child so small By the firelight I'd sit watching in awe The crackling logs and embers a glow A secret world that few would know The flame would twist in bow and leap A restless dancer who would never sleep Each flicker told a tail untamed A lesson whispered soft unnamed It warmed my hands and warmed my skin That beauty burns when drawing two in It taught me distance and taught me Grace It taught me patience in its place Around me all the world would fade Just sounding light and gold displayed That hits of sap and smoke that swirled As if fire birthed its own small world The colors dance of vivid stream Like fire had found its own daydream Orange kiss red and blue touch the air Each hue alive beyond compare A year has passed yet it's still the same That memory calls me by my name And though the world has shifted fast The flame still ties me to the past To share that site that dream so true I find myself again with you That day we rode the winding trail Through whispering pines and Shadow veil We stopped beside a river's bend What time itself seems slow to send We built a circle stone by Stone A small creation of our own We gathered branches dry and bare The forest gifting what was there With spark and breath the flame was born A living thing from what was torn And as it Rose it seemed to speak Of hearts May strong of souls unique You are my rock so firm so true And I the tree that leaned on you Together we fed that tender spark That chased away the creeping dark Two souls reflected in its glow Both fruits and wings we'd come to know We sat in silent side by side No need for words no truth to hide The night grew still and stars took aim And blessed us with the dancing flame
