I saw them earlier a little girl and her grandmother, the two of them laughing softly, as sunlight slipped between them. A snack in her tiny hands, and a smile blooming on her face, her joy was so simple, yet it almost hurt to witness. I stood there in that quiet place, somewhere between memory and longing, my thoughts drifting farther than my eyes could follow. And then a warmth behind my lashes, tears gathering like they knew the way out. But I held them back afraid that if one fell, the rest of me would fall with it. So I just watched silent and still, letting their moment pass through me like a reminder and like a piece, like something I once had and somehow lost.
