Car keys on the counter School bag hits the floor I hear battle Hear doors Hear thunder From the verbal war Pick up my brother Grab the baby Turn up cartoons way too loud Sitting on the carpet Shaking While they tear the ceiling down You keep screaming through the walls While these kids just fall apart I say "It's alright It's alright" Knowing that it's not You keep dragging me inside Every time you try to run and hide I'm holding them so tight So tight While you both come undone And I'm the one Packing up the quiet She runs to her bedroom Breathing fire He follows like a storm Somehow my name finds its way Into every slammed door I’m standing in the hallway Frozen Baby on my hip You say you’re so tired of each other But you still stay and do this sh*t One day after school Front door cracked House too still Found her folding tiny T-shirts Like a ghost stuck at the windowsill Suitcases lined up in the kitchen Shoes by the back door She said "Help your brother with his backpack" Eyes nailed to the floor She told me goodbye Said she’s sorry Said she couldn’t stay Said "It’s not about you I promise" Then took my whole world away Watched her buckle in the car seats Watched the taillights fade Left me in that quiet living room With everything they didn’t take Now the house is finally silent But it echoes every night I still tell them "It’ll be alright" On a glitching video call You two tore this place to pieces Then you left me with the rest I hope our pain now eases The children of this mess
